Choices at 16+

What about when my child is ready to leave school?

Many SEN pupils with or without statements continue their education within a school after age 16. Others go on to further education, training or employment. Planning for the future begins when pupils are in year 9. As they approach the end of their schooling, links between education and other organizations make sure that students with ongoing needs are supported.

Connexions

Connexions is an integrated service which links together youth organisations and services. It provides every teenager (aged 13 to 19 years) with the opportunities and support needed for transition into adulthood. Connexions plays a key role in advising and supporting young people with learning difficulties. Young people have the support of a Personal Adviser (PA). The PA helps the young person access specialist support and provides personal support according to individual need. More generally, the service attends LEA transitional reviews in year 9.

When a young person leaves school for alternative post 16 provision, e.g. training opportunities or a place at college, the Connexions service ensures that an assessment of an individual’s learning needs and provision is undertaken during the last year of compulsory education. Assessments will also be made for young people under 19 years of age, whose learning difficulties develop after leaving compulsory schooling or for those who choose to leave school after year 11.
